Sri Lanka annihilated Cambodia by five games to nil in the Thomas Cup preliminary badminton championships now on in Thailand.
However, Sri Lanka came a cropper when India beat them 5-0. But Niluka Karunaratne took one set off Anand Chetan in his men’s singles match and then combined with his brother Diluka to take a set off S. Thomas and R. Kumar in their men’s doubles.
In the ‘tie’ against Thailand, though Sri Lanka went down by 4-1 they put up a gallant fight when Hasitha Chanaka and Rajith Dahanayake beat T. Saesomboonsuk and N. Puangpuapech 21/19, 21/14. In the first men’s singles, Niluka Karunaratne gave T. Saesomboonsuk a good run for his money before going down in two sets while in the second men’s singles, Dinuka Karunaratne was beaten by S. Avihingsanon in a close game.
